Eye Clean Diamonds
What are they?
Natalie Diamonds considers that a diamond is ‘eye clean’ if it appears to be free of inclusions when it is viewed face up during daylight or fluorescent lighting by the naked eye (assuming 20/20 vision), from a relatively short distance, i.e. 6-12 inches away.
The definition of an ‘eye clean’ diamond varies slightly from retailer to retailer. There are three significant factors that influence the definition of an ‘eye clean’ diamond;
- The distance and point of reference
- The lighting by which the diamond is evaluated
- The viewer’s vision
According to the UGI, diamonds that are considered Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2), and Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) are considered to be ‘eye clean’.
Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) diamonds, on the other hand, may or may not be ‘eye clean’. An individual assessment is necessary to determine if they are of good value.
Included (I1, I2 and I3) diamonds are considered to be non ‘eye clean’.
