Diamond Cut
The cut of a diamond is considered by gemologists, diamond experts and jewelers to be the most significant characteristic of the 4 C’s.
Despite a diamond having the highest-grade color and clarity, it will look dull, lifeless and lacking in “life” or brilliance if the stone is poorly cut. Diamonds should sparkle, meaning that light should be reflected out of the face of the stone.
For a beautiful, sparkly diamond, look for “Very Good” and “Ideal” cut grades. “Good”, “Fair” and “Poor” cut grades are not stocked by Natalie Diamonds.
Ideal Cut Diamonds
Princess, Round, or Brilliant diamonds that are cut to ideal proportions and angles, having excellent symmetry and polish ratings, are considered to be Ideal Cut Diamonds.
The Ideal Cut Diamond has perfect proportions in order to refract light, thus producing that brilliance and sparkle up into the table and crown of the diamond.
Other Properties of Diamonds; Brilliance, Dispersion, and Scintillation
A well cut diamond exhibits each of the three above-mentioned properties. When light hits the diamond’s surface, it will either reflect off the diamond or enter it. Light reflecting off is called the diamond’s brilliance.
As for the light entering through the diamond, some of the rays of the light separate into color flashes. These are referred to as dispersion. The separation of the white light into spectral colors-derived from dispersion, is what is referred to as fire.
The flashes of color that we see when we move the diamond around and about is called scintillation.
